10. Multi-grafted Apple, Malus domestica cvs.

Artist’s Note:

This small apple tree is host to over 50 varieties of apples grafted onto its branches. Apples do not grow true from seed, so grafting is how varieties are propagated. Grafting has been noted as early as 1000 BCE, but Burbank took it to a new level. Through the use of grafting, he enabled early fruiting and increased not only the supply of food, but the variety of food to Americans. Native to Central Asia, and another wonderful member of the rose family, the apple supplies us with fruit flowers and myth.
