Artist’s Note:

For me, this tree is the crown jewel of LBH&G. Burbank created this hybrid of the California walnut and the Persian walnut, not for nuts but for lumber, as it has beautifully figured wood. Planted by Burbank himself in 1914, the tree caught fire in 1937. The beautiful second growth and burl grew out of the original trunk and both stand today. The paradox is that it is a fast-growing hardwood. The Paradox walnut is planted in many California parks as a shade, specimen and heritage tree.
