26. Paperbark Maple, Acer griseum
Artist’s Note:
I have a special interest in this maple tree as it was one of first that I drew at LBH&G. The Paper Bark Maple stands in the greenhouse courtyard next to the residence. An upright small tree, its silhouette fits the space perfectly. A close look reveals a highly interesting feature. The bark is exfoliating (peeling). Cinnamon-colored curls peel off leaving contrasting satin-textured areas of the trunk and older branches.
Its leaflets in groups of three taught me a keen lesson in observation. As I drew them, I noticed the leaves had smooth inner edges, and the outer edges were toothed. This makes it possible for them to fit together as a group of three in a wondrous design. Had I not drawn it, I might never have noticed or understood this important botanical and artistic detail.
