Rhomboid leaf
5. Chinese Tallow Tree, Triadica sebifera
Artist’s Note:
A graceful small deciduous tree, it welcomes you into the Carriage House courtyard. Surrounded by benches, its dense foliage creates a shady spot to sit and contemplate the garden. In summer, the long inflorescences of yellow flowers attract masses of pollinators. It is hard to believe that such an ornamental plant is one of the most important sources of vegetable oil and biofuels. Native to China and found throughout the world, this lovely little gem works hard for the planet.
